Try and store garden furniture for the winter in a dry shed or garage. Tilting furniture or keeping the table or chair legs off the ground is a good idea if you are leaving them in the garden. Waterproof covers will keep out the worst of the winter weather if you have them to hand, although this can look unsightly.
Hardwood furniture is very durable and the best bet but nowadays treated softwood such as pine furniture is cheap and more available. Wash down surfaces regularly with a suitable cleaning product and treat with a wood stain or paint preferably each year but otherwise when they are looking a bit the worse for wear. Make sure you cover and clean the surfaces of a table or chair that is very exposed to the elements, such as where water can lie or where the legs meet the damp earth.
Metal garden furniture needs to be cleaned and checked for rust every year. Plastic coated metal furniture may develope cracks in the plastic so treat with rust preventing paint. Oil any joints or fixings and pick off any loose paint where water can seep in.
Plastic furniture is the easiest to maintain by cleaning regularly. Some can be effected by strong sunlight but only after many years exposure.
